Women's Football Writers Festival - Be There!

Updated: Apr 10, 2022

The program has been released for next Tuesday’s Women’s Football Writers Festival ahead of the Matildas Canberra match.

For a great afternoon listening to and engaging with some of Australia's top football writers and communicators, come to the Festival, which is open to all those who love women's football. The venue is the Canberra Rex Hotel in Northbourne Avenue.

Our program features three big themes in women’s football communications – the books, the media and the digital realm of pods, plus. Our keynote speakers – Fiona Crawford, Sam Lewis and Marissa Lordanic – will bring a wide range of perspectives and styles to their presentations. They will be joined by panellists to explore the experiences, ideas and issues relating to Australian’s women’s football writing and media.

The event is timed so that you can attend both the Festival and other pre-match events. We start just after lunch at 1:30 pm and finish at 5:30 pm to join other events – or stay with us at the Howling Moon bar upstairs at the Canberra Rex Hotel.

Official opening with Football Australia Deptuty Chair Carla Wilshire.

First session – Books. With keynote speaker Fiona Crawford and panellists Russ Gibbs, Moya Dodd and Heather Reid. Plus an interview with a children’s book author from the Matildas.

Second session – Media. With keynote speaker Sam Lewis and panellists Isobel Cootes and Kieran Yap.

Third session – Digital – Pods, plus With keynote speaker Marissa Lordanic and panelists Eric Subijano and Taryn Heddo

But wait, there’s more…. We have Capital Football Chair Fran Sankey making a special award presentation to someone you will all love to see recognised. Plus Siren co-founder Danielle Warby will be presenting on Siren’s support for emerging writers.

Throughout the afternoon there will be audience involvement with Q&As and plenty of networking opportunities with writers, women’s football personalities and fans.

If you’re in Canberra, we’d love to see you there.

This event will give the women’s football community:

  • the chance to engage and interact with the people you love reading and listening to

  • the chance to catch up with the network of women’s football supporters

Who should attend? EVERYONE! Writers and readers, fans, administrators, players, referees, coaches and everyone who cares about and is excited by women's football!
